Stabila Model 80A-2 Level Review

By Dean Bielanowski

A good level is key to any construction or remodeling project. Whether it be stud walls, window frames, brick walls or any other construction or installation task requiring something to be set horizontal or vertical, a reliably accurate level is a must. Getting things square to begin with often has a follow-on effect for the final finishing touches, a case in point is setting door jambs or window casing perfectly level and square so trim molding can be easily and cleanly installed later, or a door can be hung and set square with much less planing work or modification later on.

Stabila Level

I have owned a few low-end cheap levels previously, and very few of them were any good, often no longer remaining accurate over time. I decided to purchase a better quality level, and I ended up with a Stabila 36” Model 80A-2 version. Knowing that it’s made in Germany is a welcome piece of knowledge, as the Germans tend to make very high quality and accurate tools.

The level itself is constructed from rigid box aluminum section. This modified box section design goes a long way to preventing flex and warp in the level which helps retain accuracy. In fact, Stabila levels have an accuracy guarantee of 1/32” over 72” of length, which is very good indeed. The top-mounted horizontal vial is large and easy to read for setting or checking horizontal while dual vials on each end of the level provide an accurate method of checking or setting vertical.

The level is waterproof, and as such, means it can be cleaned quite easily without water being trapped inside any component. I regularly give my Stabila a good scrub down with warm soapy water to get rid of built up debris that can affect accuracy. The bottom surface of the level is milled flat and left as bare aluminium so any paint does not affect accuracy.

These model 80A-2 levels do not have a carry handle built into the level which could be seen as a negative, however, their light weight pretty much negates the need for a handle, so I don’t consider it a negative at all. My Stabila has seen about 3 years of regular use so far and it still proves itself accurate in both the horizontal and vertical. I couldn’t be happier and would definitely consider purchasing another Stabila brand level in the future, if I ever needed to that is!

Stabila Model 80A-2 levels are available in 24”, 36”, 48”, 72”, 78” and 96” long versions.
