The Perfect Work Bench

By the Professional Power Tool Guide

The perfect work bench is the dream of every craftsman. There always seems to be something they would change or add to their work bench to make it a bit better. The perfect work bench for you is the one that works best for you. No one else matters in the decision unless you are sharing one. Work benches can be crafted by their owners or purchased in kits. Either method can lead to a work bench that meets all your dreams.

The first major decision for the perfect work bench is what height, depth and width. Let’s start with height. Standard height for store bought work benches come in at around 36”. But this height can be too short for some and too tall for others. Some use what is called the belt buckle test. The height of the table should be just under where a belt buckle would sit on your waist. That allows for easy bending without over reaching. One ideal solution is the adjustable legs that are now available. Depth is another question. If the workbench is against the wall, then you need to be able to reach from the front to the back without any problem. If the workbench is portable or standing in the middle of the room, then the depth can be deeper. For width, that is pretty much a matter of preference and space available. If you have a wall that can handle a 10’ bench, then go for it.

What material should the perfect work bench be made of? Many store bought benches are a combination of metal legs and wood top. Most home made benches are totally of wood. No matter what the choice, the materials need to be sturdy and durable. The base should be constructed to remain steady when bumped or leaned against. If the legs have casters, the locking mechanism should be industrial strength. The top needs to be flat. Plywood and MDF are sometimes used. Some homemade benches are made with 2×4’s butted together.

Bench Vises

What vises should you have for the perfect work bench? Bench vises are indispensible for any work shop. Some craftsmen prefer vises that can be clamped down to the work surface as needed. Others prefer permanent installations. And there are various types of bench vises to consider. Traditional vises rely on hand cranking to secure the piece. There are new quick release vises available for rapid clamping and releasing. Some vises have a fixed base while others provide a swivel capability.

  • “Very neat, the spectrum analyzer really shows what’s on the frequency and where. Looks like you have the project all ready for the summer storms.
I like my LapTop and use it all the time. I turned on my DeckTop a week ago just to set the time and to charge the battery for the clock. I doubt if I’ll buy another one.”
