It’s always lovely to be able to sit outside in the garden during the summer while enjoying a glass of iced tea or wine. But when the light starts to fade you shouldn’t feel like you have to go inside. There are many effective ways to give a bit of light to your garden, some of which will really wow your friends!
If you just want to make your garden glow through the night there are some low-wattage lights that you can use. Depending on whether they’re going to be a permanent fixture, you may need to look into getting some outside electric put in. This can be quite expensive, although once it’s installed is will be long lasting. If you do get some outdoor electric installed, you could have an old fashioned street lamp installed as well. They’re very attractive and give off a lot of light. They’re also a great feature to have in your garden and can be used all year round. They will normally have to have a concrete base and be screwed to this but they are then very sturdy.
If you do not want to go to the extremes of having a permanent light put in, you might think about putting in some solar-powered lights. They’re available in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be placed along the edges of the garden by digging small holes out for the stakes with a trowel and then pushing the soil firmly around them so that they don’t move; you can also attach them to a fence if they’re on a string. Another great thing about solar-lighting is that you won’t have to worry about trailing wires all over the place. They’re often the cheaper option, but they don’t emit as much light as electric lights. They may also run out of charge after a few hours. The rechargeable batteries may need to be replaced if you notice the lights are going out shortly after coming on.
Candles are another way to give your garden a nice glow. You can buy big long outdoor candles which can be placed along the edges of your garden. You could also purchase some lanterns to hang from the fence on brackets which are easily installed. Lanterns that hold tea light candles are also available, which offer an effective glow.
Oil burning lanterns are another option. You make them yourself by saving your old jam or pickle jars. Just remove the lid and wrap some wire around the neck of the jar underneath the rim. Make sure it’s tight. Then make a wire handle coming from this. This can then be painted with whatever design you wish with some glass paint. These can then be hung from your brackets. These will look very effective in your garden and you can have fun making them with your kids!
There are other things that you can put on your garden table such as an oil burner. The oil you burn can also help keep the bugs away. Patio heaters, chimneys and log burners all give off light as well as heat and are great when entertaining.
Overall, whatever you decide, homemade or bought, cheap or expensive, there are many effective ways to light your garden which will satisfy you and wow your friends and neighbors.
