by the Professional Power Tool Guide

Is an old power tool worth fixing? No tool is going to last forever. But older tools can continue to do their job for decades. Average and professional grade tools are made for basic maintenance. Before you give up on a tool, take a few minutes to see if you can salvage it.

Bostitch Portable Air CompressorSome tools just need a good cleaning in order for them to work again. Many times the housing may get clogged with dust and debris. This can cause the motor to overheat and shut down. An air compressor can be used to clean out any vents on the surface of the tool. Make sure that any attachments are in good shape as well. Some tools will not work if an attachment is not working properly or causes an imbalance. Basic maintenance is also important to getting an old tool to work. If the manual says oil a certain gear, try some oil. Make sure the housing is closed tight and that all screws are in place. If something is out of alignment, tools will not work properly.

Check the power cord. If there is any cracking or fraying, it is time to replace it. If the cord is pulling away from the housing or any of the plug pins are missing, replace it. Check with the manufacturer and see if a replacement cord is available. If not, many home improvement stores can sell you a universal replacement cord. Open up the housing and compare the wiring with the new cord. If there is any questions on what wires go where, contact the manufacturer for instructions. If all looks good to go, cut the old power cord off about 4” down. Take one connection off and put the new one off. Continue with all connections until they are all replaced. Close the housing and plug it in.

A bad switch can also make an old tool not work. If the trigger is hard to press or does not always start the tool, then replacing it may be an option. Check the manual and see what the part number is. Then contact the manufacturer to see if a replacement part is available. At this point, you may have to make a choice. These replacement pieces can be expensive. The price may not be worth it when compared to a new tool. But if the price is right, go ahead and order it. Once you get it, open up the housing of the tool. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and make the replacement.
